A new security proposal dubbed BIP-361 has been introduced with a defense framework to protect the Bitcoin network from future computing threats. Theoretically, quantum computers operating with immense processing power could crack private keys using public keys exposed on the network.
This quantum hacking threat prompted the formulation of BIP-361, which focuses on long-term fundamental security. This approach sets it apart from the BIP-110 proposal regarding Ordinals - a proposal that previously drew opposition from Michael Saylor. Both drafts are now subjects of heated debate across various Bitcoin community forums.
The defense mechanism offered by BIP-361 relies on halting new Bitcoin transactions to legacy addresses. These types of addresses are considered vulnerable to quantum attacks. The proposal outlines a five-year transition period before permanently disabling all legacy signature functions.
The Steep Cost of Securing the Network
This five-year transition period carries severe consequences for early-generation coins. An estimated 1.1 million Bitcoin belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto and first-generation miners currently sit in P2PK addresses. The security system of these older addresses falls into the category vulnerable to being breached by quantum machines.
Without asset migration, millions of these dormant historic coins may become unrecoverable. These coins could potentially be locked permanently after the five-year deadline expires. As a middle ground, BIP-361 developers may introduce a special recovery mechanism to rescue funds belonging to active users who still hold them in legacy wallets.
The status of BIP-361 currently remains in the early proposal stage. The network has not set a definitive activation timeline or determined the majority consensus threshold required to implement the rule.
Is This the Only Option
Security concerns regarding quantum hacking machines have long been discussed among core developers. Before the BIP-361 draft surfaced, the developer community debated alternative solutions in the form of quantum-resistant signature verification schemes. This technical solution was claimed to process verifications in 243 milliseconds.
Permanently locking over a million coins belonging to the creator to secure today’s network forces Bitcoin holders to weigh their options. The available choices come at the expense of one side - leaving security vulnerabilities open out of respect for the founder’s untouched wallets, or severing access to old coins to ensure the funds of millions of new users remain safe from quantum hackers.
