Consensys has stirred up the competitive Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem with its latest airdrop announcement. The company behind the MetaMask wallet is allocating 85% of the total Linea token supply specifically to users and builders actively participating on its network.
The 85% figure immediately places Linea among projects with the largest community allocations, breaking away from the standard set by its competitors. By comparison in the current market landscape, Arbitrum allocated only 44% of its token supply to the community. Meanwhile, Optimism set a much smaller share, distributing roughly 19% in its initial airdrop round.
This wide percentage gap is deliberate. Amid layer-2 competition increasingly crowded with new protocols, granting a dominant share to the public is Linea’s core strategy to drive network growth metrics. The focus of this large-scale distribution is to accelerate a surge in Total Value Locked (TVL) while attracting more users to onboard and transact regularly.
Claim Rules Remain Undisclosed
While the 85% figure is an obvious draw, the path to claiming it remains unclear. The initial announcement went out without any technical details. Linea has yet to disclose the exact wallet snapshot date, specific eligibility criteria, or a schedule for when the token claim process will open to the public.
The lack of details has only heightened interest in Linea’s announcement. Users who have actively transacted on the Linea network are eagerly awaiting clarity on how their past transaction history will translate into token allocations. The decision to hold back eligibility rules has also fueled speculation over which types of smart contract interactions will carry the highest weight in the evaluation system.
Shifting Layer-2 Allocation Trends
The decision to hand 85% of the token supply to the community marks a shift in layer-2 launch trends. Through Linea, Consensys is deliberately trimming the allocation typically reserved for internal teams so that active participants quickly take ownership of the ecosystem. Relinquishing dominant control is designed to foster organic future growth. What remains now is seeing how stringent Linea’s eligibility filter will be once the official rules are unveiled.
