Layer-2 network Abstract, built by the creators of the Pudgy Penguins NFT collection, has officially announced the end of its journey. The zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup protocol, originally launched specifically to support their internal NFT ecosystem and gaming products, is scheduled to shut down operations entirely on December 15, 2026.
Abstract’s shutdown adds to the growing list of secondary networks pushed out after failing to maintain their footing amid intense competition across Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem. The closure forms part of an ongoing consolidation wave, as Blast L2 has also decided to halt operations and shutter its services.
Beyond pure blockchain infrastructure, the retreat of Web3 players has also impacted traditional brands. Global automaker Porsche issued an official statement confirming it is fully exiting the Web3 ecosystem and abandoning its digital initiatives.
Hacker Returns $3.8 Million to NEAR
While many projects are heading for the exits, NEAR Protocol saw a resolution to an exploit that fully secured user assets. A hacker returned all $3.8 million in stolen funds previously taken from NEAR’s security systems.
Such a full return remains a rare occurrence in the crypto industry. The hacker’s actions confirmed white hat intervention, turning the NEAR incident into proof that successful negotiations can recover user assets without inflicting any financial losses.
Brutal Shakeout for Secondary Layers
The downfall of Abstract and Blast dashes developer hopes regarding the ease of launching standalone layer-2 networks. High-stakes competition across Ethereum’s secondary layers continues to aggressively weed out L2 infrastructure that fails to attract users, forcing remaining operators to fold and cease operations.
