A lavish lifestyle on social media has once again backfired on a cybercriminal. Dritan Kapllani Jr, a US-based individual, was recently exposed by pseudonymous on-chain investigator ZachXBT. Kapllani is accused of being behind the theft of $19 million through social engineering. Rather than targeting major crypto exchanges or decentralized finance protocol vulnerabilities, his operation directly targeted wallets belonging to individual crypto holders.
The multimillion-dollar loot was not hidden away. Instead, Kapllani Jr actively showed off the proceeds of his crime through a glamorous lifestyle on social media. He regularly posted photos of luxury cars, expensive watches, chartered private jets, and nights out at exclusive clubs. The case underscores an emerging trend in the crypto crime landscape: modern-day thieves are increasingly narcissistic and unhesitant to act as public exhibitionists.
Decisive Evidence From a Phone Call
The entire parade of luxury ultimately unraveled due to the perpetrator’s own carelessness. In a recorded phone call, Kapllani Jr proudly and openly flaunted the crypto wallet holding the stolen funds. This recording became a crucial piece of evidence complementing ZachXBT’s investigation. In an extensive investigative thread on X, the sleuth laid out photo evidence directly paired with the perpetrator’s on-chain transaction history.
The doxxing thread quickly went viral across the crypto community. ZachXBT’s report swiftly garnered 7,326 likes and 685 reposts. The high engagement reflects intense public scrutiny and outrage over hackers targeting retail users as victims.
Exploiting the Psychology of Crypto Holders
The social engineering tactics used by Kapllani Jr worked specifically by manipulating victims’ psychology. Unlike technical hackers searching for vulnerabilities within smart contract code, this technique purely exploits human weaknesses. Individual crypto holders were lured, pressured, or tricked into handing over direct access to their digital wallets.
For self-custody holders, the revelation serves as a stark warning. Every layer of hardware security and complex passphrases mean nothing if a wallet owner can be persuaded to hand over their keys through a single conversational trick. Stay vigilant against suspicious interactions, as crypto theft methods now target human vulnerability rather than merely breaching systems.
