Aiden Pleterski, the self-proclaimed “Crypto King” on various social media platforms, is scheduled to stand trial on Oct. 5. The proceedings at Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice mark a crucial test of evidence after the case sat unresolved for more than two years.
The collapse of the crypto Ponzi scheme began after Pleterski allegedly defrauded his followers and swiped up to $30 million. The fundraising activities took place between 2021 and 2022. Canadian authorities responded to the trail of losses by charging him with money laundering and fraud in May 2024.
Kidnapped by Victims for Three Days
Pleterski attracted funds by offering massive weekly returns. He lured capital by claiming he was capable of executing savvy digital asset investment strategies.
When the investment scheme collapsed, some victims refused to wait for formal legal avenues. In December 2022, a group of men who had allegedly lost money in his investment scheme kidnapped and tortured Pleterski.
The captivity lasted for three full days under threat of violence. The perpetrators demanded the return of their investment funds before finally agreeing to release the young man.
Proceeding Without a Lawyer
Ahead of his trial opening, Pleterski lost the opportunity to be represented by counsel. A CBC News report revealed that he failed to secure a trial adjournment, which he had intended to use to seek new legal counsel.
The court’s refusal forces him to face the trial schedule alone. He is expected to represent and defend himself in the courtroom.
The trial proceedings for the fraud case are scheduled to last around four weeks. If found guilty of fraud, Pleterski faces a maximum prison sentence of up to 14 years.
The deciding chapter of this $30 million case finally leaves social media claims behind and moves entirely into the courtroom. Pleterski must answer the legal charges from his followers - this time entirely on his own.
