Users’ reliance on bridges to move between layer-2 networks may soon come to an end. The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) processed the first atomic transaction directly connecting Ethereum mainnet with a layer-2 network on October 5, 2026.
The test transaction transferred 0.001 ETH and coordinated state changes across both execution layers simultaneously. EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez described the milestone as the first atomic L1-to-L2 execution on Ethereum mainnet. This technical breakthrough addresses the liquidity fragmentation issue, where L2 users have long been forced to rely on separate liquidity pools and asynchronous cross-chain messaging systems to move assets.
Seamless Smart Contracts
The concept of synchronous composability is key to EEZ’s operation. It bundles actions involving Ethereum and rollups into a single unit - either both succeed together or both revert entirely. This eliminates the risk of funds becoming stranded mid-flight due to execution failures in intermediary bridges.
EEZ’s architectural design allows a smart contract on a rollup to directly call a contract on Ethereum mainnet. The L2 contract then receives the result and proceeds within a single transaction, eliminating the need for separate bridge steps. Hydration co-founder Jakub Gregus called this intermediary-free execution one of the most significant milestones in the crypto industry today.
Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina first introduced the EEZ project last March. The Ethereum Foundation co-funded the project’s development, while its proponents are in the process of establishing the EEZ Association in Switzerland as a formal umbrella organization.
Gnosis Becomes the First Adopter
Gnosis Chain is preparing to adopt this new technology at the protocol level. The GnosisDAO community approved proposal GIP-153 in August with overwhelming support of 123,158 GNO votes in favor, compared to 115 against and 151 abstentions. The vote shifts Gnosis Chain’s trajectory from an independent layer-1 network to an EEZ rollup that settles its transactions on Ethereum.
The target genesis launch for Gnosis EEZ is slated for December 2026 or January 2027. However, users and developers should remain cautious. EEZ software is currently in early-stage implementation and has not yet undergone security audits. Its interfaces and storage layouts are also highly likely to change prior to full release.
The initial version of Gnosis EEZ will utilize a centralized composer to sequence transactions. That design choice introduces trust assumptions for users, at least until the transaction ordering system can operate permissionlessly without a single sequencer. Reported by crypto.news.
