Streaming video service Netflix has officially released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming drama series titled The Altruists. Told across eight episodes, the show is scheduled to air on November 19, 2026, chronicling the true story behind the $8 billion collapse of crypto exchange FTX.
The television production brings prominent names behind the scenes. Higher Ground, the production banner owned by Barack and Michelle Obama, is directly involved as producer. Screenwriting duties are co-helmed by showrunners Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt, while director James Ponsoldt was tapped to direct the premiere episode.
Examining the Relationship Between Bankman-Fried and Ellison
The central storyline of The Altruists focuses on the dynamic between key decision-makers at the firm. The series delves into the intense relationship forged between former FTX Chief Executive Officer Sam Bankman-Fried and former Alameda Research trading chief Caroline Ellison. Bankman-Fried is portrayed by actor Anthony Boyle, starring alongside actress Julia Garner, who was cast in the role of Ellison.
The supporting cast also features actors portraying real-world figures from the crypto industry during FTX’s downfall. Actor Terry Chen joins the lineup as Binance crypto exchange founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ. The FTX executive suite is portrayed by Alex Lawther as Sam Trabucco, Matt Rife playing Ryan Salame, Karan Soni appearing as Nishad Singh, and Eugene Young rounding out the top brass as Gary Wang.
From Idealism to Prison Sentences
The storyline traces the erosion of the principles that initially defined the company’s identity. The television drama highlights the shift from their founding philosophy of effective altruism, which gradually devolved into a string of financial fraud scandals.
The fraud saga culminated in real-world legal consequences for the exchange’s founder. Those financial crimes resulted in a court-ordered 25-year prison sentence for Bankman-Fried, accompanied by an asset forfeiture order totaling $11 billion.
