Seperempat Warga Kanada Kini Punya Kripto - Naik 2,5 Kali Lipat Saat Pemerintah Mulai Membatasi

A Quarter of Canadians Now Own Crypto - Surging 2.5x as Government Tightens Rules

A total of 25% of Canadians now hold crypto, up sharply from 10% in 2023. This 2.5-fold surge in ownership over three years was revealed in the latest survey by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC). The jump in nationwide adoption reinforces the broader global trend of accelerating crypto adoption year after year.

The data was drawn from a comprehensive survey conducted between December 2025 and January 2026, polling 2,360 Canadian adults aged 18 and older. In addition to the surge in active holders, the OSC survey recorded widespread public awareness, with 59% of respondents now aware of crypto assets.

“The crypto market continues to evolve, and Canadians are participating more than ever,” said Naizam Kanji, Executive Vice President of Strategic Regulation at the OSC, summarizing findings that highlight the digital asset’s appeal among citizens.

What Happens Before They Transact?

This wave of new owners highlights a dual narrative regarding retail investor behavior and literacy. The OSC report shows rising consumer risk awareness, with roughly half of all crypto owners now claiming they make a habit of checking a platform’s registration status before depositing funds or trading.

However, this diligence appears to rest on a shallow foundation of understanding. The OSC survey found that many respondents still harbor misconceptions about the crypto investment ecosystem. These misunderstandings span the types of regulations protecting them, insurance coverage limits, and how transactions actually work. Risk awareness has not yet been fully backed by a solid grasp of the assets they hold.

Opposing Directions in Ottawa

While the retail investor base has climbed to 25%, this adoption dynamic faces a contrasting approach from the federal government. Canadian central authorities in Ottawa have been actively drafting regulatory measures aimed at tightening the space for crypto.

This counter-stance was evident in a draft bill introduced last April. Through the proposed legislation, authorities seek to curb the use of crypto for political donations. The same rules also target a ban on digital asset ATM operations, a tightening maneuver aimed at reducing fraud risks associated with crypto ATMs.

These divergent trajectories highlight the reality policymakers must manage. With a crypto holder base now encompassing a quarter of the adult population, the asset class is no longer a fringe phenomenon, and tough regulations from Ottawa will directly impact the financial choices of its own citizens.
