Python.Net is a bridging infrastructure that allows the Python language and the .NET ecosystem (such as C#) to read and execute each other’s code. Currently, the hub of AI and machine learning innovation is in Python, while industry-standard game development engines like Unity use C#. Python.Net bridges both ecosystems without the need for slow external server architectures.
This infrastructure is used by game developers when they need to run advanced AI models locally, such as NPC dialogue generators or dynamic difficulty adaptation systems built with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch. Instead of rewriting complex neural network logic in C#, developers can directly call functions from their original Python scripts from within the game runtime.
How to get started:
- Open the NuGet package manager in your C# game project environment and install the pythonnet package.
- Call the PythonEngine.Initialize() function in your game’s initialization script system to load the Python execution engine into application memory.
- Open a Py.GIL() scope to acquire thread control, then import your Python script file and call its AI inference functions just like calling a standard C# class.
