A US-based man is allegedly the mastermind behind a $19 million crypto heist - and instead of hiding his ill-gotten gains, he actively flaunted them on social media. His identity was unmasked by ZachXBT, one of the crypto space’s most respected blockchain investigators.
According to ZachXBT, the man, identified as Dritan Kapllani Jr, is linked to a series of social engineering scams targeting crypto asset holders. Total funds drained from victims are estimated at $19 million.
How the Social Engineering Scheme Trapped Victims
Unlike cyberattacks that exploit technical vulnerabilities in code, social engineering targets the weakest link in digital security: humans. Scammers typically pose as exchange support agents, wallet security personnel, or trusted figures, manipulating victims into surrendering passwords, two-factor authentication codes, or even their wallet’s recovery phrase (seed phrase).
Once access is obtained, victims’ funds are drained within minutes and are nearly impossible to recover. Because these attacks leave no server breach logs, they are often difficult to trace - unless investigators follow the money trail directly on the blockchain, an area where ZachXBT specializes.
A Flashy Lifestyle That Exposed His Tracks
Ironically, what made Kapllani stand out was not his ability to stay under the radar, but his habit of showing off. ZachXBT noted that he routinely flaunted luxury cars, expensive watches, private jets, and nightclub outings across social media. In one instance, he was even recorded on a call displaying a wallet allegedly containing the stolen funds.
For an on-chain investigator, such digital footprints are a goldmine. The combination of conspicuous wealth with no clear origin and publicly visible blockchain transactions gradually unmasked the person behind the anonymous wallet.
