Hyperliquid is opening its network to anyone looking to create prediction markets through the HIP-4 proposal. However, this permissionless access comes with a steep price tag: developers must post a deposit of 500,000 HYPE tokens, or roughly $30.4 million, before they can launch their markets.
The multi-million-dollar deposit requirement serves as a commitment bond. The capital will be locked in the system for six months. If a market creator drafts ambiguous betting rules, resolves an incorrect outcome, or leaves a market abandoned for more than a week without resolution, the $30.4 million deposit can be slashed. Network validators hold the authority to seize the collateral via a voting mechanism.
Pursuing an Unbounded Market
Hyperliquid’s decision to open prediction market creation to the public is driven by market opportunity. The team believes the range of real-world events suitable for prediction markets vastly exceeds the list of assets eligible for trading on spot or perpetual futures exchanges.
Delegating market creation to the community is seen as the fastest way to tap into that vast potential. To prevent low-quality or frivolous markets, validators will be responsible for setting standardized outcome frameworks that developers must use as a foundation.
The system will also enforce quota limits in the initial phase. Each market creator is restricted to a maximum of 100 resolution outcomes. This allocation is not permanently spent, but rather released back for reuse once a market they created is properly resolved and closed.
Subject to Change Before Launch
Developers with the necessary capital will still need to wait for the rollout schedule. The open market creation pipeline will first launch on testnet before being deployed to the mainnet in an upcoming upgrade. The development team specifically noted that current specifications and rules remain subject to change prior to the testnet release.
This expansion aligns with Hyperliquid’s position in the crypto derivatives sector. Previously, alongside the Phantom platform, the project urged US regulator CFTC to modernize rules governing onchain derivatives trading.
The Cost of Trust on Decentralized Networks
The $30.4 million deposit-locking mechanism highlights how decentralized networks tackle the challenge of trust. In the absence of real-world legal contracts binding market creators, the threat of multi-million-dollar capital forfeiture serves as an effective mechanism to ensure unknown parties act honestly through to resolution.
