Nigeria Bentuk Dewan Kripto Nasional untuk Awasi Arus $59 Miliar - dan Presidennya Sendiri yang Langsung Turun Tangan

Nigeria Establishes National Crypto Council to Oversee $59 Billion Flows - And the President Is Directly Stepping In

The digital asset market in Sub-Saharan Africa is entering a new, more structured phase. Nigeria has officially established the Virtual Asset Council, a dedicated body tasked with formulating and coordinating all crypto policies and regulations at the national level. News of the newly formed oversight council sparked widespread reactions across the digital asset community, garnering over 3,034 likes when first shared by a market analyst account on social media.

State involvement in this initiative is far from half-hearted. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly directly overseeing the regulatory formation process. The Virtual Asset Council is designed to add an extra layer of oversight on top of existing structures. Previously, Nigeria relied on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to monitor digital asset traffic. The new council will serve as an inter-agency coordinator to ensure unified regulatory enforcement.

The economic scale of the industry prompted the government to take a firm stance. Crypto flows moving through Nigeria have reportedly topped $59 billion. Such transaction volumes position the country as one of the largest digital asset markets in mainland Africa, while also ranking at the top among developing nations.

Not a Sudden Regulation

Regulating Nigeria’s crypto ecosystem did not happen overnight. The country had previously laid legal groundwork through an initial regulatory framework, reported as digital asset guidelines for crypto industry players. The establishment of this coordinating council represents the next step in streamlining rules to close legal loopholes between agencies.

Nigeria’s move to strengthen its regulatory lineup also reflects a wave spreading across multiple jurisdictions. Throughout 2026, more than 50 countries have reportedly taken a similar route to tighten or clarify ground rules for digital asset entities operating within their borders.

The Stakes for Daily Users

For most Nigerians, cryptocurrency plays a role far beyond speculative investment. The country holds the record for the highest crypto adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa. A predominantly young population, combined with limited banking access, has driven millions of citizens toward stablecoins as a store of value and a medium for daily financial transactions.

The new council carries the burden of striking a balance between industry control and citizens’ financial lifelines. If the new oversight proves overly restrictive, people who have come to rely on stablecoin transactions could lose their sole independent financial access. Regulations aimed at bringing order risk inadvertently hitting the most vulnerable demographic groups.
