Ondo Founder Dies Without a Will at 32 - Mother, Sister, and CEO Battle in Court for Token Control

The sudden death of Ondo Finance founder Nathan Allman in May 2026 at age 32 left a leadership void at the helm of the Ondo DeFi project. Crucially, Allman passed away without leaving a will. The absence of legal documentation immediately ignited a three-way succession crisis over his estate. The contested assets consist not merely of cash, but a controlling stake in Ondo Finance alongside massive holdings of ONDO tokens. The token portfolio comprises both liquid tokens and locked allocations with a gradual vesting schedule stretching over the next three years.

In the initial phase, a probate court appointed Nathan’s parents, Kathleen Allman and Lawrence Allman, as legal heirs entitled to administer the entire estate. The operational leadership vacancy was subsequently filled by Ian De Bode, who stepped in as the new CEO. However, the new management arrangement was short-lived before conflict erupted into the open.

Kathleen maneuvered to appoint herself as chair and interim CEO. She then installed her daughter, Tahnee Towill, onto the board of directors and attempted to fire De Bode. The attempted ouster led to a ruling by a Delaware court on September 3, 2026, which restored the status quo. The judge affirmed that De Bode remains the legitimate acting CEO and board member, while rejecting De Bode’s bid to declare Kathleen and Tahnee unfit to serve as directors.

The Fight Moves to a Hawaii Court

Deadlocked in Delaware, the battle for control of Nathan’s estate has spilled across state lines, sparking an internal family dispute. Dr. Lani Clinton, Nathan’s half-sister, teamed up with Ondo investor David Chen to file a new petition in a Hawaii court. They are requesting that the court establish a limited conservatorship over Kathleen’s ownership interest in Nathan’s estate.

Dr. Clinton’s petition includes a series of sharp allegations regarding Nathan’s mother. She alleges that Kathleen suffers from dementia and alcoholism, and engages in reckless spending habits that jeopardize the value of company assets. The health allegations immediately drew a counter-response from Kathleen’s camp, who see an ulterior motive behind her family members’ maneuvers.

Allegations of Backroom Coordination

According to Kathleen’s response filing, Dr. Clinton’s legal action in Hawaii is not a genuine family initiative, but a tactic directly coordinated by De Bode and Chen. The goal, she argues, is to sideline Kathleen and replace her with a conservator who would act in De Bode’s favor. Kathleen pointed to ties between the two opposing parties: Chen funded the new petition in Hawaii, shares the same legal team as De Bode, and was caught using sealed materials from the earlier Delaware proceedings.

The succession dispute shows no signs of abating. Ondo Finance declined to comment on their corporate governance litigation, and phone calls to De Bode went unanswered. The future direction of the protocol now hangs in the balance until the courts determine which camp holds controlling voting power. Reported by CoinDesk.
