Petrobras Tests Cardano to Track Green Fuel - Prevents Carbon Double-Counting

Brazilian state-owned energy company Petrobras is testing the Cardano blockchain through two research projects announced on Wednesday (Sept. 30). The first project targets tracking claims for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a drop-in low-carbon jet fuel compatible with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. The second project focuses on tracking Petrobras’ Diesel R, a diesel variant partially produced from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oil or animal fat.

Closing Double-Claiming Loopholes

The clean energy industry has long faced accounting loopholes in book-and-claim systems. Under this framework, an airline can pay for the environmental attributes of green fuel even if the physical fuel itself is consumed elsewhere. Without an accurate tracking mechanism, two different companies could claim the same emissions reduction twice.

Cardano was brought in to bring order to that data flow. The network records the origin of each emission benefit, the recipient, and verifies when claims are filed. Storing data on a public ledger ensures each ton of carbon is counted only once to prevent double-counting.

For the Diesel R project, the blockchain ledger logs specific information at every custody transfer point, from early production and transit routes to end consumption by users. This detailed supply chain traceability helps companies assemble Scope 3 emissions reporting.

The Petrobras partnership adds to a growing list of Brazilian entities using Cardano. State-owned tech agency SERPRO and industrial training organization SENAI have already tapped the same network. Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard emphasized that Brazil has become one of the most consistent adopters of their system, spanning government agencies to industry.

Research Phase and New Utility

Despite the clear potential to resolve overlapping accounting, both Petrobras initiatives remain strictly research projects. The tracking model for diesel products is still an early proposal. To date, there has been no official announcement regarding the volume of fuel to be tracked or a timeline for deploying the system in full-scale operations.

For Cardano, the Petrobras logistics experiment coincides with moves to expand network utility this month. Cardano officially integrated with x402, a payment standard enabling applications and artificial intelligence (AI) agents to pay for data or compute services autonomously. Gregaard also noted that institutional custody platform Fireblocks recently rolled out support for Cardano Native Tokens.

This adoption move by the state-owned energy giant serves as a key validation of blockchain record-keeping capabilities. The real test ahead will be proving the system can handle relentless operational demands in the field. Reported by CoinDesk.
