A four-year journey building cross-chain infrastructure has come to an end. Router Protocol will cease all operations on September 30, 2026. Alongside the shutdown, the team is burning 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens from the protocol treasury. The destroyed tokens represent more than 30% of the maximum 1 billion ROUTE supply.
The market reacted swiftly to the announcement, triggering a sell-off. ROUTE price plummeted roughly 50% within 24 hours, dropping to around $0.00006 according to CoinGecko data. The Router team described the shutdown as the most honest and responsible path forward for the community, citing a lack of buyers, replacement operators, or community members willing to take over protocol operations.
Capital Flight to AI and Price Wars
Operational costs proved to be the heaviest hurdle. Revenue generated from bridging fees failed to offset system maintenance expenses. Liquidity across the Web3 ecosystem has also remained largely stagnant over the past two years, coinciding with a massive shift of capital toward artificial intelligence (AI) projects.
Fierce competition among interoperability protocols also drove bridging fees lower, while user activity increasingly concentrated on a few dominant chains. This dynamic eroded opportunities for Router Nitro, which had been designed to facilitate cross-chain transactions across 30 EVM and non-EVM networks.
Developers previously explored avenues to secure fresh funding. Over the past year, the team pursued commercialization, offered technology licensing, and sought buyers for a full acquisition. However, all efforts failed to generate sufficient capital to keep the project afloat.
Consecutive Cyberattacks
Financial troubles were compounded by security vulnerabilities. In February 2025, the protocol suffered a solver-level exploit, though incident responders managed to recover roughly 80% of user funds. Unfortunately, the core network layer was breached again five months later in July 2025, with all stolen funds unrecoverable.
The bridge infrastructure sector has long been a prime target for hackers. According to an August bridge risk report, cumulative losses from exploits across various cross-chain protocols have surpassed $4 billion since 2021.
These mounting challenges previously prompted downsizing efforts by the community. In September 2025, members voted to sunset Router Chain to redirect remaining resources toward developing Open Graph Architecture, but the strategic pivot ultimately reached a dead end.
Exchange Delisting Countdown
Ahead of the September 30 deadline, Router is coordinating its exit from the open market. The team is working with centralized exchanges to delist ROUTE trading pairs, with final cutoff dates varying according to each platform’s individual schedule.
With no savior in sight for Router, the conclusion of the four-year-old protocol demonstrates that advanced technology cannot survive long without sustainable revenue and market demand. Source: crypto.news.
