Developer Sky Mavis has officially ended the development phase for Axie Infinity Classic. The original version of the play-to-earn (P2E) game, which was once a global phenomenon, will no longer receive updates from its creator. As a final step, Sky Mavis decided to hand the operational fate of this Web3 game over to the community. This decision presents a challenge to loyal players, who must now deliberate on whether they have the willingness and capacity to keep the game’s system running independently.
This move also marks a parting of ways between Axie Classic and its successor, Axie Infinity Origins. Sky Mavis remains focused on developing the Origins version, while Classic’s update history has been concluded by the developer. Axie Classic was the initial iteration that led the game to break player records between 2021 and 2022. In its prime, the game dominated the GameFi industry in Southeast Asia, with its player base concentrated in the Philippines and Indonesia. This termination decision was reported as a headline by Philippine-based media outlet BitPinas, signaling the strong relevance of the project’s legacy for local readers. The company’s exit signals were actually visible when they reactivated the Lunacian Lounge space some time ago, an initiative aimed at gathering the remaining active players in the old ecosystem.
Can the Community Run It Alone?
This transfer of control raises a real question for the P2E ecosystem: can an open-source community sustain the operations of a blockchain game without funding and intervention from its original developer. The Axie Classic community is now forced to prove their ability to manage internal governance. Without a centralized team to patch servers or regulate token circulation, the game’s economic survival now depends purely on the commitment of these pioneers.
Players Split Amid Market Downturn
This shift in leadership for Axie Classic takes place as sentiment in the P2E market cools down. Data reports from CryptoRank note that the GameFi sector’s value fell by nearly 4%, contrasting with Bitcoin’s price, which is struggling to break past the $65,000 level. The current GameFi market landscape is also highly fragmented. Capital flows and players are split among new projects every month. A recent post from X account @PlayToEarn highlighted that the highest 24-hour activity increases in this sector were held by different names: the @gangsterarena project led with 854.55%, followed by @movn_world soaring 610%, and @BoomLandGames rising 563.64%.
Responsibility Shifts Shoulders
For veteran players, Sky Mavis’s decision is a clear boundary. There are no longer official complaint channels to the developer. The burden of preserving this legacy has shifted entirely to the community. Their choices in the near future will determine the fate of this GameFi pioneer, whether it will continue to live powered by a decentralized network, or slowly die ignored by its base.
