Rating agency S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital recently launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index on July 20-21, 2026. This new benchmark tracks 18 digital assets, led by Ether (ETH), BNB, Solana (SOL), TRON (TRX), and Hyperliquid (HYPE) as its top five constituents.
What sets this list apart from typical crypto indexes is its underlying methodology. Rather than a simple competition of market capitalization, it is a benchmark built on actual revenue generated by each respective protocol.
Strict Selection via Protocol Revenue
The index methodology filters assets through a multi-tiered screening process. Starting from the broader S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Asset Index, each coin must initially meet a minimum market cap threshold of $500 million - or $250 million for incumbent coins already in the index - as well as maintain a liquidity ratio above 0.5.
After clearing the initial screening criteria, data feeds from the Artemis platform are used to rank all assets based on the revenue they generated over the past two quarters. Digital assets are then added one by one to the S&P basket until the selected group represents exactly 99% of the total revenue across all qualifying tokens.
For its weighting system, the S&P and Pantera index uses adjusted market capitalization. The methodology caps the largest constituent at 35% and sets a 20% limit for all other holdings. Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P DJI, stated that the index is built on an economically grounded, fundamentals-driven framework, noting that the tool is specifically designed for diversified portfolios.
Institutional Recognition for TRX and HYPE
The inclusion of TRON (TRX) and Hyperliquid (HYPE) in the top five reflects a new standard in institutional recognition. While TRON has for years often been widely known as a controversial crypto project and HYPE is a relatively new player in the industry, both secured top positions purely on the strength of their market-dominating operational revenue track records.
S&P’s latest move presents a markedly different approach compared to its previous indexes. In 2025, the firm released the S&P Digital Markets 50 Index, which blended 15 cryptocurrencies with 35 publicly traded stocks with crypto-related operations. In contrast, the 18-token S&P Pantera index purely evaluates underlying asset performance from directly within the blockchain itself.
Regarding the partnership, Pantera Capital’s Dan Morehead said the resulting benchmark addresses one of the biggest pain points in the crypto sector. He noted that the primary challenge for investors today is not technological complexity, but rather knowing how to rationally allocate capital. The index is positioned to serve as the underlying benchmark for future investment derivative products.
For retail and institutional market participants alike, the arrival of this benchmark highlights an emerging trend. Beyond social media narratives surrounding whatever coin is most popular today, institutional capital is steadily looking toward classic business principles: seeking value certainty in coins that consistently deliver real revenue into network treasuries.
