Inggris Tunjuk 6 Bank Pimpin Obligasi Digital Pertama - Tembus Pasar LSEG Awal 2027

UK Taps 6 Banks to Lead First Digital Government Bond - Set for LSEG Market in Early 2027

Six banks have officially been tapped to lead the issuance of the UK’s first digital government bond instrument. Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets have been appointed as joint lead managers to launch the Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) in the first quarter of 2027.

Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby announced the appointments in a keynote address at UK Digital Assets Week on October 6, 2026. The sterling-denominated DIGIT bond is designed to overhaul sovereign asset issuance pipelines. Rigby confirmed that DIGIT will become the first digital asset listed on the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) main market. The entire issuance process will take place on the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox platform, while final settlement will be executed fully onchain utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT).

HSBC’s Dominant Role and LSEG Connectivity

The UK government intentionally separated the DIGIT pilot transaction from the country’s existing core debt management program. This separation provides authorities with the room to test an independent system without putting critical financial infrastructure at risk.

On the technical side, HSBC holds the most prominent role. The bank has supplied the DLT platform for the pilot since February 2026 and will issue the DIGIT bond through its proprietary Orion platform. HSBC’s position became even more solid after becoming the first firm approved to operate as a digital securities custodian within the sandbox this past July. Shortly thereafter, ClearToken followed as the second entity to receive similar operational approval.

Also in July, HSBC and LSEG formalized an agreement to build a bilateral digital securities connection. Thanks to this infrastructure pathway, prospective investors will have two entry points: they can access the DIGIT bond via LSEG’s infrastructure or directly through the bank’s proprietary network.

RTGS Synchronization in 2028

The DIGIT issuance accelerates banking integration with blockchain architecture. The Bank of England is targeting 2028 to launch a full synchronization service. This new service will directly link digital asset ledgers with sterling inside the central bank’s Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system.

The private financial sector is also executing its own rollout schedule. The UK Finance organization is planning the issuance of three commercial digital bonds set to launch in the first quarter of 2027. These three instruments offer different formats, where trading and final settlement are executed using tokenized deposits.

The direct involvement of six major banks proves that blockchain financial frameworks are no longer merely experimental. State authorities have now set a definitive rollout timeline to migrate asset recording from closed systems to distributed ledgers.
