US Treasury Yields Hit 5.2% as Iran Sets 7 Conditions to Reopen Hormuz - Bitcoin Stagnates at $84,000

Two colliding macroeconomic pressures are keeping Bitcoin pinned near $84,000. The US 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.20% during the September 24 trading session before closing at 5.18%, up from 5.11% the prior day. The 30-year yield mirrored the government debt trend, closing at 5.47% - its highest level since 2004.

US borrowing costs climbed after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16 to a range of 3.75%-4.00%, projecting additional hikes this year. Central bank officials signaled that monetary tightening is set to continue. Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson noted that inflation is running at 2.5-3%, above the 2% target, and supported further tightening if conditions evolve as expected. Similar sentiment was echoed by New York Fed President John Williams, who called an additional hike before year-end a reasonable expectation depending on incoming data.

Recent US economic data has reinforced room for the Fed to maintain elevated interest rates. The composite PMI index for September came in at 58.4, up from 56.0 in August - marking the fastest pace of business growth in more than five years. Initial jobless claims also dropped to 197,000 for the week ending September 19.

Seven-Day Proposal to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The crypto market has also faced pressure from Brent crude prices holding above $100 per barrel amid energy supply concerns surrounding Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has now submitted a seven-day plan to Washington through mediators. The proposed framework begins with a cessation of hostilities, followed by the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and continues with comprehensive nuclear negotiations.

Iran’s conditions include ending hostilities including in Lebanon, unfreezing $12 billion in frozen state assets, waivers on oil sanctions, and lifting the US naval blockade. US officials viewed the mediated talks as positive and constructive, but stressed that Washington will not rush into any decision.

Bitcoin Awaits Macro Clarity

The combination of bond yields drawing in capital and elevated energy prices has dampened investor appetite for risk assets. Bitcoin has responded to the barrage of macro data with stagnant movement around $84,000.

This overlapping dynamic is forcing market participants to wait for resolution in either major variable before taking definitive positions in the market. Reported by crypto.news.
