Starting September 28, 2026, the Wallet in Telegram service officially shed its former identity and rebranded as Walt. Developed by The Open Platform (TOP) and founded by Andrew Rogozov, the digital wallet has grown rapidly, serving tens of millions of active users and unlocking access to transactions across more than 300 cryptocurrencies.
The rebranding comes in tandem with major plans from its parent messaging app. Telegram is now preparing to launch its native Gram wallet, directly targeting more than 1 billion active users worldwide.
Division of Roles Within the App
The presence of two custodial solutions on a single platform creates a clear division of responsibilities. Telegram’s native wallet initiative was first revealed by CEO Pavel Durov in July 2026. The internal project focuses on building zero-fee, instant transfers to support financial flows for its billions of users.
The Gram wallet is being designed directly by Telegram’s development team using a self-custodial security model. Its primary purpose is strictly to power activity within the chat ecosystem. Account holders will be able to use the Gram wallet to purchase network assets, send Telegram Gifts to contacts, buy internal Stars currency, send funds to friends, and pay everyday service bills.
In contrast, Walt continues to position itself as a third-party platform catering to a broad spectrum of financial needs. Walt’s offerings include multi-blockchain crypto storage and asset trading execution. Walt also grants users access to traditional investment products beyond crypto, spanning equities and ETFs to precious metals markets.
Two Complementary Systems
While appearing to share similar baseline functionalities, both entities will continue to operate side-by-side within the Telegram interface and are not designed to replace one another. Walt has even developed functional pathways enabling users to top up their Gram wallet balances directly.
Walt’s development roadmap still includes several crucial post-rebrand initiatives. Two major planned expansions - physical card integration and the rollout of artificial intelligence technology across the platform - have yet to receive confirmed public launch schedules.
The dual-wallet setup streamlines how users navigate asset traffic. Everyday transfers and peer-to-peer social transactions are handled by the Gram wallet, leaving Walt positioned to serve cross-asset investments on a global scale.
