Whale Loses $4.5M Shorting HYPE, Undeterred Trader Drops $19.3M on New Bet

A crypto “whale” has closed a short position on the HYPE token with a staggering $4.52 million loss after holding on for nearly two months. But instead of backing down, the trader immediately placed a much larger new bet.

Losing Big, Then Doubling Down

According to on-chain tracker lookonchain, whale wallet 0xf02d exited its previous short position deep in the red. Undeterred, the trader opened a new 10x leveraged short on 283,948 HYPE worth $19.34 million. This means the whale is betting that the price of HYPE, the native token of on-chain perpetual exchange Hyperliquid, will continue to drop, putting up more than four times their previous losses to prove their conviction.

A position with 10x leverage means a price swing of around 10% in the opposite direction is enough to liquidate the entire capital at stake. In other words, this whale is placing high conviction on a very fragile foundation.

When Stubbornness Meets the Market

This story captures one of the most human paradoxes in the crypto market: conviction turning into stubbornness. Whether 0xf02d sees something the market has yet to notice, or is simply chasing losses with a more reckless bet - only time will tell. What is certain is that, thanks to blockchain transparency, thousands of onlookers are now watching every move in real time, something virtually impossible in traditional financial markets.
