Swiss bank UBS, which manages over $7 trillion in assets, recorded a sharp jump in its crypto exposure. The closing financial reports for the second quarter of 2026 show an increase in call option positions for the BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) from 80,000 to 1.95 million underlying shares as of June 30 - a 24-fold surge in a single quarter.
This maneuver does not stop at option contracts. Direct holdings of IBIT shares in their portfolio also rose 12% to 407,890 shares with a valuation of around $13.6 million. At the same time, UBS’s put options were slashed by 53%, dropping from 303,300 to 143,300 underlying shares. The combination of increasing buy volume and a sharp reduction in sell instruments signals a shift in the portfolio structure toward a bullish-leaning position.
Questions Over Net Exposure
Although the growth figures appear dominant, this data does not capture the bank’s entire trading desk strategy. This quarterly filing document does not disclose key operational details such as the strike price or when the contracts expire. Without these two key metrics, outsiders cannot calculate with certainty how much directional net exposure the company actually carries from the filing report.
This mountain of call options could serve functions unrelated to speculation on Bitcoin’s rise. These positions could act as a hedge for dealer activities, market-making strategies (two-way liquidity provision), or specific orders from discretionary client portfolios. It is also possible that a portion is allocated specifically for the bank’s internal capital turnover (proprietary exposure).
Red Carpet for Selected Clients
Beyond the restructuring of the portfolio profile, there is real infrastructure being built behind the scenes. UBS is currently known to be finalizing a dedicated channel so that their clients can begin accessing Bitcoin and Ether trading. However, this door is designed exclusively for their selected private banking clients based in Switzerland, not for the general retail client base.
This quarter’s IBIT accumulation move also needs to be measured over a longer timeframe. Although the current total holdings of 407,890 IBIT shares represent an active addition over the past three months, the position is still lower compared to UBS’s track record at the end of 2025, when their holdings reached 548,614 shares.
The pattern is clear: traditional institutions as heavy as UBS are beginning to lay their second-layer foundations on top of spot ETFs that have already received regulatory approval. Through millions of option contract shares and the opening of private trading channels, they ensure that clients do not migrate to other platforms to gain crypto exposure, while still maintaining risk boundaries on the bank’s own balance sheet.
