Three cross-border payment entities have agreed to establish new ground rules for money-spending machines. Ant International has officially partnered with Visa and Mastercard to design an interoperable payment identity framework, naming the new standard ‘Know Your Agent’, or KYA.
The KYA initiative primarily focuses on access security. The standard is designed as a foundation for commercial merchants and payment gateway providers to evaluate three key elements of artificial intelligence (AI) bots: verifying machine identity, defining spending authority authorized by human owners, and monitoring behavioral compliance as AI agents execute autonomous transactions.
Citing research figures from McKinsey, global consumer commerce handled directly by AI agents is projected to surpass $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030. Such massive transaction volumes are driving financial infrastructure operators to establish identification layers now, before payment networks are flooded with purchase orders from computer programs.
Cross-Platform Identity Recognition
From a developer’s perspective, the joint KYA framework eliminates bureaucratic hurdles in registering autonomous agents. Once AI owners register their bots and pass verification on one provider network - such as Ant International - the program is exempt from re-verification requirements when switching transaction venues.
This cross-recognition status ensures that agent profiles are deemed valid upon entering either the Visa or Mastercard payment ecosystems. Inter-network data exchange allows autonomous shopping engines to seamlessly execute orders across commerce platforms without being held up by manual identity registration processes.
Continuing the Stablecoin Route
The tripartite agreement builds upon previously established autonomous payment infrastructure. The crypto market previously witnessed early rollouts such as Mastercard Agent Connect and Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect, two pioneering systems designed to bridge token-based authentication methods with final transaction settlement pathways powered by stablecoins.
Unifying bot recognition standards marks a pivotal shift toward acknowledging autonomous programs as legitimate financial user entities. For Web3 project creators, designing autonomous agents now requires accounting for machine identity track records. Bot code lacking KYA status risks being isolated within walled gardens, cutting off access to mainstream retail commerce wallets.
