Binance Enables USDT Payments Across Millions of PayPay Merchants in Japan - Merchants Settle in Yen

Binance Pay has officially linked foreign tourists’ crypto wallets with point-of-sale systems across Japan. Starting Wednesday, September 30, 2026, international travelers visiting the country can directly spend their USDT balances at millions of merchant locations across the PayPay payment network.

This payment settlement integration operates via the HIVEX interoperability network. The intermediary system connects overseas QR code scanning services to Japan’s PayPay ecosystem. Binance stated that it is now the first crypto service provider to tap into PayPay’s vast merchant network through the HIVEX route.

No Need to Hold Crypto

The key to this integration lies in the settlement process, which frees shop owners from dealing with digital assets. When Binance Pay users scan the QR code and settle bills using USDT, merchants at the checkout counter still receive their payments in Japanese yen.

This automatic conversion process eliminates exchange rate volatility risks for retailers. Merchants do not need to register a crypto wallet or go through a separate opt-in process. USDT payment access is immediately available at all locations displaying the PayPay logo, spanning major convenience store chains, grocery shops, vending machines, taxis, and public transit services.

Prior to Binance wallet’s entry, PayPay’s infrastructure was already processing transactions from nine overseas digital payment services via HIVEX. However, that list only consisted of traditional finance apps whose user bases are concentrated in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Targeting Tourist Spending

Binance’s physical retail expansion targets the massive influx of international tourists in Japan. According to official data from the Japan Tourism Agency, the country saw a record 42.7 million inbound visitors throughout 2025.

Even so, visitor arrivals have begun showing signs of cooling down in 2026. Over the first eight months of this year, total foreign tourist arrivals stood at 27.6 million, down 2.7% from the same period last year. August 2026 figures also showed a 9.6% year-on-year drop, with tourist numbers hovering at 3.1 million visitors.

The introduction of crypto to retail cash registers comes as Japan’s domestic regulations become increasingly receptive to digital assets. Signs of easing regulatory conditions were highlighted when Laser Digital secured the first new crypto exchange license in Japan in four years.

For travelers, this adoption eliminates the hassle of exchanging currency at the airport. A USDT balance on a mobile app can now be used just like physical yen banknotes, whether for buying refreshments or paying for ground transportation.
