Prediction market platform Kalshi is in advanced discussions to raise approximately $1 billion in fresh capital. The deal targets a company valuation approaching $40 billion. Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management are preparing to lead the funding round, supported by Tiger Global Management and new participant Dragoneer Investment Group.
The $40 billion figure represents an 82% jump from the company’s valuation four months earlier. On May 7, 2026, Kalshi closed a $1 billion Series F funding round that valued the company at $22 billion. Coatue led the Series F round alongside investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, IVP, Paradigm, Morgan Stanley, and ARK Invest. Formal documentation for the latest round has not yet been signed, meaning the investor composition and final transaction value could still change.
Trading Volume Rises Amid IPO Speculation
Trading activity on the platform continued to notch high figures before informal discussions regarding an Initial Public Offering (IPO) began earlier this year. Kalshi’s monthly trading volume exceeded $16 billion shortly before public listing talks surfaced. During the previous Series F round, the company reported that institutional trading volume jumped 800% within six months, while annualized trading volume climbed from $52 billion to $178 billion.
A Form D filed by Kalshi with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 25 indicated an exempt offering of securities. Although the document did not confirm the reported $1 billion transaction, the filing confirms that Kalshi is raising capital privately.
Where Does Polymarket Stand?
Polymarket, Kalshi’s closest rival, is also negotiating a fundraise of around $1 billion at the same time. However, Polymarket’s valuation is likely capped at $20 billion, or half of Kalshi’s target valuation.
Kalshi has held a license from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a ‘designated contract market’ since November 2020. The regulator later expanded its operating license in January 2025 to cover intermediated futures trading services.
The Test of State Gambling Regulations
Kalshi still faces legal scrutiny over whether some of its event contracts constitute gambling under state-level laws. So far, various federal appeals courts have issued differing rulings regarding these disputes.
Resolving these regulatory challenges will determine Kalshi’s path toward the public markets. Prospective public investors require legal certainty regarding all event contract offerings before the company proceeds with an IPO. Reported by crypto.news.
