Block has officially brought Bitcoin into the era of machine-to-machine commerce. The Jack Dorsey-founded company joined the x402 Foundation and integrated the Lightning network into the x402 open payment protocol on September 24, 2026. Developed by Coinbase, the protocol leverages the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response code to enable AI agents and web services to request and settle automated payments without human intervention.
Traces of the Lightning integration were recorded in the system a day prior to the official announcement. A technical commit titled “exact Lightning on lnbtc” was pushed to x402’s public repository on September 23, 2026. The added lines of code ensure autonomous agents have direct access to transaction rails on the Bitcoin network.
Infrastructure for Billions of Microtransactions
Steve Lee, head of Spiral - a Bitcoin development initiative under Block - provided specific projections regarding the urgency of the new feature. Lee highlighted that AI agents will execute billions of small payments across the internet. The demand for massive transaction volumes requires payment rails that are both low-cost and fast.
Block views the Lightning network as well-suited to meet the demands for high-volume, low-cost, and instant payments within the agentic commerce ecosystem. Beyond x402, Block is also playing an active role in the Universal Commerce Protocol, which is designed specifically to support AI-driven commerce infrastructure for small businesses.
Who Is Part of x402?
The x402 infrastructure officially launched under the Linux Foundation in April 2026. With Block joining, it now stands alongside major tech players including Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, the Solana Foundation, and initial developer Coinbase.
Activity on the x402 network demonstrates real-world daily usage. Over the past 30 days, the protocol recorded 75.41 million transactions with total volume reaching $24.24 million. That accumulated volume comes from interactions among 94,060 buyers and 22,000 active sellers who previously relied on other payment options.
Block’s strategic maneuver secures Bitcoin’s footing as computer programs begin transacting routinely. When AI entities need to rent extra compute or purchase data access, they need rails capable of processing thousands of tiny fractions per second - a role now directly handled by Lightning.
