Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have officially renewed their exclusive licensing agreement through 2051 for S&P 500 index options (SPX). The announcement of the long-term contract extension pushed Cboe shares up more than 6% shortly after being released to the market.
The partnership between the two companies dates back to 1983, when Cboe launched the world’s first S&P 500 index options. The derivative instrument has continued to grow, hitting a record trading volume of 970.6 million contracts throughout 2025.
Targeting Products Beyond Traditional Derivatives
The official statement from both companies explicitly highlighted the potential development of new products beyond conventional index derivatives, citing explorations into tokenized options contracts integrated into blockchain networks.
Cboe emphasized that the tokenization phase remains exploratory and does not represent an imminent product rollout. If eventually realized, tokenized contracts would operate as distinct entities rather than mere replicas of the standard SPX options traded today.
SEC Innovation Pathway and Exchange Race
Regulatory green lights have facilitated these plans. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently issued an innovation exemption that unlocks a new legal pathway, allowing tokenized U.S. equities to trade on-chain without requiring issuers to register as national securities exchanges.
Cboe’s move follows an adoption wave from other traditional institutions. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has already partnered with Blockchain.com to explore tokenizing equities and ETF instruments.
Elsewhere, BlackRock has partnered with Ondo Finance. A joint consortium involving BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and the DTCC is also actively exploring the issuance of tokenized equities.
Challenges of On-Chain Options Architecture
Issuing options instruments as on-chain tokens demands a far more complex technical framework than tokenizing conventional equities. Options contracts carry layers of mechanical variables such as expiry dates, strike prices, and final settlement mechanics.
The 27-year license extension provides Cboe ample runway to build out its technical infrastructure step by step. As regulations gradually soften, index options are lining up to enter distributed ledgers.
