Coinbase Rancang Kustodian Anti-Kuantum Lindungi Aset $250 Miliar - Saat Bitcoin Sendiri Belum Punya Standar

Coinbase Designs Post-Quantum Custody to Protect $250 Billion in Assets - While Bitcoin Lacks Standards

Coinbase has begun designing a post-quantum custody system to protect a vast array of institutional assets valued at an estimated $250 billion. News of this security infrastructure preparation was announced directly by Coinbase Chief Cryptographer Yehuda Lindell during an appearance outlining the company’s plans on the MARA Foundation TV program.

The primary challenge is that these preparations are moving ahead of the underlying network protocol. The Bitcoin network has not yet determined which post-quantum signature scheme it will eventually adopt, leaving wallet and custody providers without a unified technical standard to rely upon.

Flexibility While Awaiting Network Decisions

Faced with an absence of clear standards, Coinbase opted to build an open security architecture. Rather than tying its new system to a single cryptographic candidate, the company is preparing technical support for multiple potential signature schemes simultaneously. This layered design strategy ensures Coinbase will be ready to adapt once Bitcoin formally introduces a quantum-resistant protection scheme.

The deepest challenge of this overhaul lies in the access control layer. Modern institutional-grade custody systems typically rely on Multi-Party Computation (MPC) technology to distribute private key control, ensuring authority is not concentrated in a single point of failure. When the Bitcoin network eventually revamps its signature scheme, large-scale custodians will inevitably need to overhaul their MPC technology from the ground up to stay in sync with the core network layer.

Holding the Majority of Institutional Capital

The scale of this system development reflects the vast sums the company secures daily. The $250 billion figure outlined by Lindell is likely a conservative estimate of the actual total funds. A US custodial audit estimate report from last August placed the value of Coinbase’s institutional assets at approximately $376 billion. The discrepancy between internal and external valuations is likely driven by differences in reporting dates and the scope of assets included in the audit calculations.

Coinbase holds an overwhelming majority as a third-party digital asset custodian. The crypto exchange is responsible for securing over 80% of total assets flowing through spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF products across the US market. Its client roster spans various financial institutions, including BlackRock, which relies on Coinbase Custody to safeguard digital assets tied to its investment products.

Institutional asset custody demands proactive security measures. When hundreds of billions of dollars across dozens of institutional clients are managed on a single platform, protective defenses must be built long before future threats materialize at the doorstep.
