Emirates Now Accepts Crypto for Flight Tickets - But Airline Still Refuses to Hold Coins

Emirates has officially added Crypto.com Pay to the checkout options across its website and mobile app, allowing travelers to purchase flight tickets using digital assets. The rollout marks the culmination of a partnership agreement between Dubai’s flagship carrier and Crypto.com, first announced publicly in July 2025.

Customers booking flights via desktop will now see a scannable QR code during checkout, while mobile users are automatically redirected to the Crypto.com app to complete payment authorization. According to Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer at Emirates, the decision reflects shifting consumer habits, catering to tech-savvy younger generations who manage their finances and plan travel directly from their phones.

However, the option is not yet available to everyone. Emirates noted that the feature is restricted exclusively to eligible United Arab Emirates (UAE) residents. Neither party has indicated whether or when the service might be expanded to international travelers outside the UAE.

Steering Clear of Volatility

Although passengers can pay for tickets using digital currencies, Emirates will not hold crypto assets. All bookings remain calculated, billed, and settled strictly in UAE dirhams.

This is where Crypto.com comes into play. The exchange platform handles the entire conversion process from customer crypto to fiat currency behind the scenes. Through this mechanism, the airline avoids price exposure since it never takes custody of digital assets.

The payment setup rests on a solid legal foundation after Crypto.com secured a Stored Value Facilities (SVF) license from the Central Bank of the UAE in May 2026. The license permits non-bank entities to custody customer funds or crypto while processing payment systems under central bank supervision. Under the SVF framework, the transaction flow bridges both worlds: travelers can pay using their crypto balances, while the airline receives final settlement in dirhams or compliant dirham-backed stablecoins.

Expanding Adoption in the Middle East

Emirates’ decision highlights the growing footprint of digital assets across the Middle Eastern aviation sector, though it is not the first regional carrier to do so. In May 2025, Air Arabia introduced ticket payment options using AE Coin - a dirham-pegged stablecoin.

For Crypto.com, the large-scale payment integration with Emirates strengthens its retail foothold. According to CoinGecko data, the platform recorded roughly $686 million in daily trading volume over the past 24 hours.

The instant conversion model adopted by Emirates illustrates the most practical approach for major corporations engaging with the crypto ecosystem. While appealing to Web3 users requires modern conveniences, safeguarding cash flow against market volatility remains the ultimate priority. Via Cointelegraph.
