Bitcoin dipped below the psychological $64,000 mark during Tuesday’s trading ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, before edging slightly higher while remaining pinned just below the level. This slight pullback reflects a market facing a rare degree of uncertainty. CME FedWatch data shows a 70% probability that the Fed will keep benchmark rates unchanged. However, the remaining 30% odds leave room for a surprise 25-basis-point rate hike - an unexpected move that could rattle high-risk assets.
The root of this tension stems largely from the leadership style of the new Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh. Heading into his second meeting at the helm of the US central bank, Warsh has intentionally curtailed the institution’s tradition of offering forward guidance. This move effectively strips away the compass investors have relied on for years to anticipate the Fed’s next moves. Thahbib Rahman of research firm Block Scholes noted the rarity of this situation, pointing out that since 2015, only two Fed meetings have left market participants as sharply divided over the outcome as they are today.
Institutional Pressure and Price Resilience
This indecision is also clearly reflected in institutional capital flows. US spot Bitcoin ETFs logged net outflows of $11.64 million on July 27, marking their third consecutive session of withdrawals. Technical indicators also point to a tight squeeze. Bitcoin’s price now sits below its 20-day moving average (MA) of $64,449, while clinging narrowly above the 50-day MA near $63,343. Meanwhile, the Chaikin Money Flow indicator signals slightly negative capital flows at -0.04, alongside a daily RSI of 48.13 - a neutral stance hovering just below the midpoint.
Despite the pressure from capital outflows and murky macro sentiment, the leading cryptocurrency’s resilience remains evident. Throughout July, Bitcoin gained 6%. This green performance stood in sharp contrast to traditional equity benchmarks; the S&P 500 remained largely flat, while semiconductor stocks slumped nearly 20%.
Two Opposing Scenarios Heading Into August
The key to the next price move now rests in the Fed’s hands. A hawkish outcome would likely exert heavy pressure on Bitcoin by strengthening the US dollar and pushing up Treasury yields. If that happens, Bitcoin’s immediate support could give way toward the $62,500 level. Conversely, a less restrictive policy tone could inject fresh momentum into the asset, helping it rebound toward $65,200.
Even as short-term headwinds persist, long-term projections continue to harbor fuel for optimism. Crypto analyst Michaรซl van de Poppe suggested that early August price action could target the $68,000 region, with potential to break through $75,000. A similar technical perspective was shared by on-chain analyst Ardi, who highlighted Bitcoin’s current MVRV ratio of 1.21. This level sits well above cycle bottoms of 0.69 and 0.75 - zones that marked the depths of severe bear markets in 2018 and 2022. Adding to the narrative, WatcherGuru noted in a post garnering 2,610 likes that Bitcoin is now just 90,000 blocks away from its next halving event.
For retail investors looking to step in right now, strap in; the next few days are less about guessing the exact direction and more about whether your capital can withstand the volatility sparked by a single statement from the Fed leadership.
