Hyperliquid Labs has established its primary operational base in Singapore since 2024. Co-founder Jeff Yan leads a core team of around 11 people who oversee the decentralized derivatives platform from their facility there.
However, physical proximity to the local central bank does not bring the platform within the scope of local regulatory oversight.
Architecture Beyond Regulatory Reach
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) stated that Hyperliquid entities operate entirely outside its jurisdiction. The central bank pointed to the network’s permissionless architectural design as the fundamental reason why the exchange is not bound by conventional financial regulations. In an interview with the Financial Times, an MAS official disclosed an additional fact: the authority found no trace of licenses or regulatory oversight covering Hyperliquid in any major jurisdiction worldwide.
This condition previously prompted MAS to place the platform on its Investor Alert List (IAL) on June 26 to protect the public. The regulator clarified that adding the exchange to this list serves purely as an investment warning for residents, rather than a legal prohibition against operating. MAS also emphasized its stance that this administrative warning status does not indicate any findings of criminal wrongdoing.
Focus on Transparency and Expansion
Facing open statements from the regulator, Hyperliquid maintained that the company has never marketed itself as an MAS-licensed entity. The development team took a non-confrontational stance, stating that they are fully open to constructive collaboration with authorities to set new standards for transparency across the on-chain ecosystem.
This confirmation of domicile comes at a crucial moment for their business roadmap. The location clarification accompanies Hyperliquid’s preparations to launch regulated perpetual contracts specifically targeting traders in the United States market. To ensure compliance in that new market, the platform secured partnerships with exchange Bitnomial and Payward, the parent company of Kraken. For the crypto community, this move highlights a new reality in the era of decentralization: the inevitable boundary between permissionless code and conventional corporate administrative obligations.
