Nigel Farage Menang Pemilu Sela Clacton - Tapi Langsung Hadapi Investigasi Donasi Kripto $6,7 Juta

Nigel Farage Wins Clacton By-Election - But Immediately Faces Investigation into $6.7 Million Crypto Donation

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage won the Clacton by-election with 63% of the vote. He defeated satirical candidate Count Binface, who secured 27% support in a contest without participation from other major parties. Although former Prime Minister Keir Starmer described this by-election as a desperate stunt, the victory brings Farage back to a parliamentary seat under the era of Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

However, Farage’s return was immediately met with an old problem. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards immediately resumed the investigation that had been suspended in July when he resigned from parliament.

Billionaire and Former Convict Donations

The primary focus of the investigation highlights the origins of Farage’s campaign and operational funding. The first spotlight falls on the $6.7 million in funds from crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne. Second, regarding staff and security support funded by George Cottrell, a former convict with links to the crypto casino business.

Farage initially referred to Cottrell’s donation as a gift for the Brexit campaign. Later, he described the flow of funds from both Harborne and Cottrell as unconditional gifts.

UK parliamentary rules require every new member to register all financial interests no later than one month after being elected. This reporting obligation also covers various benefits received over the past 12 months. If the investigation proves a breach of the rules, Farage could be suspended from parliament - a punishment that could potentially trigger a new by-election in Clacton.

Foreign Funding Loopholes

Farage’s case has sparked concerns about the influx of foreign money into British politics. Following the case, a number of Labour MPs have reportedly proposed that the moratorium on crypto donations, in place since March, be turned into a permanent ban. This step is proposed to prevent the influence of foreign actors.

An International Bar Association report highlights loopholes in the current rules. Unincorporated associations are apparently allowed to donate more than $675 directly to British politicians. This loophole is vulnerable to being used by entities with business in the UK as a channel for foreign money or dark money.

Farage’s political victory is now being directly tested by financial transparency rules, highlighting the complexity of separating private crypto flows from public political integrity. Reported from Cointelegraph.
