Crypto exchange OKX has officially restricted its Hong Kong-based employees and those traveling through mainland China from accessing the Claude AI model created by Anthropic. This access redirection decision was made shortly after the crypto exchange’s enterprise account was temporarily suspended by Anthropic in early August.
OKX’s corporate account status has now been fully restored and is operational again. However, to maintain license compliance, all work requests from employees in the affected locations are now directly routed to alternative AI models. This redirection serves as the safest workaround to avoid repeating violations of regional access rules outlined by Anthropic.
In its official explanation, OKX acknowledged the fact that some of its past internal activities may not have complied with the AI service provider’s geographical restriction policies. From the beginning, Anthropic has not included Hong Kong or mainland China in the list of authorized locations to support access to Claude or their commercial API.
$8 Million Monthly Bill for Machines
OKX’s reliance on artificial intelligence is not just an experiment. The crypto exchange’s monthly spending specifically for AI usage has reportedly reached $8 million. These funds go toward maintaining an AI infrastructure that permeates almost every beat of their operations.
OKX continues to push for AI utilization across all company lines. These smart machines are employed to assist with market research tasks, accelerate programming code writing, and handle various other daily workloads. This integration runs so deep that OKX management has made the ability to use AI a mandatory metric in each employee’s performance evaluation.
What OKX experienced aligns with risk mitigation patterns that previously emerged in the traditional financial sector. Large banking institutions like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs have reportedly taken similar steps. Both immediately restricted access to Anthropic’s services after management reviewed the strict requirements of operational licenses in the Hong Kong region.
Building an Autonomous Agent Marketplace
The $8 million monthly budget is not only spent on the exchange’s internal work efficiency. OKX is also redirecting this computing power to build a suite of new AI products aimed directly at end users.
One key project they are working on is the development of an on-chain marketplace specifically for autonomous AI agents. Through this new ecosystem, AI agents can search for tasks, complete requested work, and receive payments directly in the form of digital assets.
These region-based software restrictions show another side of smart machine adoption in the crypto industry. While an entity races to make AI the brain of daily operations, national borders that can usually be bypassed by blockchain are now binding them again through a language model provider’s license agreement.
