Pi Network has set September 15, 2026, to activate its Protocol 27 upgrade. This system upgrade brings three major technical additions to the mainnet: smart contract authentication integration, an Automated Market Maker (AMM) DEX, and public RPC server infrastructure. The rollout builds upon the foundation of Protocol v25, which was deployed on July 22. In the July release, the network integrated additional privacy layers through BN254 elliptic curve cryptography and zero-knowledge proof implementations.
However, the completion of its technical infrastructure faces a massive user onboarding bottleneck. Internal records show that 60 million mobile miners, or Pioneers, have claimed asset ownership. Yet, migration data indicates that only 16.6 million users have completed their transition to the mainnet. With a completion rate of just 27.6%, over 43 million registered users remain unable to access smart contract capabilities when the September upgrade goes live.
The Verification Burden of Millions of Documents
The bottleneck delaying miners from moving to the mainnet stems from the Know Your Customer (KYC) identity verification process. Pi Network delegates verification to an internal crowdsourced review network that relies entirely on human labor. The system engages 1,094,680 validators to review user data. These examiners have completed over 526 million identity verification tasks throughout their operational history. However, the immense volume of manual checks continues to keep millions of miners on the waiting list.
This pattern of restricted access resurfaces in the software layer of Protocol 27. The deployment of smart contracts and decentralized exchange facilities will not be immediately permissionless. Instead, execution is gated behind authentication mechanisms supervised by SocialChain. Developers have yet to announce a clear timeline for when permissionless access will open to the broader public to build utility directly on the network.
A Testing Phase for the Mainnet
The addition of the DEX component rounds out Pi Network’s core technical architecture. The introduction of trading facilities shifts the project’s focus from writing code to resolving the user backlog. The network’s optimal performance now hinges on the ability of human validators to clear the document verification queue so that mainnet facilities do not sit idle upon launch.
