Being an ‘OG’ in a crypto network is no guarantee of safety. A Solana veteran - often referred to as an OG in the community - recently lost 181,000 SOL worth roughly $14.2 million, or over Rp230 billion, in a single attack. And what happened next only shows how sophisticated the perpetrator was.
A Fast-Moving Sequence of Events
According to data shared by on-chain analytics account lookonchain citing findings from investigator ZachXBT, the thief did not keep the stolen funds on Solana. The attacker dumped all 181,000 SOL, bridged the funds to the Ethereum network, and swapped them for 7,918 ETH, worth approximately the same $14.2 million.
This swift and clean maneuver was no panic move. Dumping assets and moving them cross-chain in a short timeframe is a classic hallmark of actors who know exactly what they are doing - not mere lucky amateur scammers.
Why ‘Relocate’ to Ethereum?
Bridging stolen funds across networks is a classic tactic to hinder tracking. Every time assets cross an inter-blockchain bridge and are swapped into different tokens, the trail investigators must follow becomes increasingly fragmented and layered. Swapping SOL for ETH also provides the attacker with flexibility: Ethereum has a more mature ecosystem of mixers and protocols to further obscure the origin of funds.
The good news is that the transparent nature of blockchain allows on-chain trackers to map such movements. Every transaction is permanently recorded, which is why investigators like ZachXBT are repeatedly able to trace stolen fund flows all the way to exchanges - the point where perpetrators are most vulnerable to being caught when attempting to cash out.
A Recurring Lesson
This incident reinforces a timeless message: years of crypto experience do not automatically make anyone immune. Whether through a leaked private key, a phishing link, or a compromised device, a single small loophole is enough to drain a wallet built over years. For large asset holders, splitting holdings into cold wallets and not putting all eggs in one hot wallet is no longer just advice - it is a necessity. Reported via @lookonchain on X.
