Physical violence to seize digital assets in the real world has struck Europe once again, this time targeting a family home. Four assailants broke into the residence of a crypto industry employee located in Vendin-le-Vieil, in the Pas-de-Calais department of France. The nighttime raid turned into a terrifying ordeal for all occupants. According to preliminary findings from the investigation reported by the newspaper Le Parisien, the gang immediately overpowered and tied up the husband, wife, and their two children, aged 8 and 12.
The victim’s family was held hostage in their own home for more than three consecutive hours. Throughout the captivity, the perpetrators repeatedly pressured the father with one primary objective: forcing him to hand over access codes to his digital asset storage. This extortion was marked by direct physical violence against the residents. The father was beaten by the robbers, while his daughter was struck in the face with an object made from a car key.
Emergency Call Ends Captivity
The series of physical assaults eventually led to the surrender of the access codes, and the robbers drained approximately €40,000 worth of crypto assets from the victim. The hours-long hostage situation finally shifted when the father took action. He managed to dial emergency services around 8:00 AM, making the call while still tied up with ropes by the perpetrators.
The victim’s call to police caused the four assailants to panic and quickly flee in a vehicle. Their escape occurred just moments before French police units arrived to secure the crime scene. Medical reports confirmed that none of the family members suffered life-threatening injuries after the night of the robbery.
Targeted Motive Against Crypto Workers
French authorities have not released the identities of the four suspects, who remain at large and subject to an active manhunt by law enforcement. The primary focus of police investigators is now to uncover the motive behind the incident, examining whether the robbers deliberately targeted the victim from the start due to his job in the crypto sector.
The robbery in Vendin-le-Vieil serves as stark evidence of a recurring wave of similar crimes. The incident adds to a growing list of physical attacks specifically targeting crypto asset holders and industry workers across Europe. Holding high-value digital assets now demands complete vigilance against real-world physical security threats. Reported via crypto.news.
