KOSPI Korea Jatuh 10% dan Picu Circuit Breaker - Likuidasi Kripto $100 Juta Tersapu dalam Sejam

South Korea’s KOSPI Drops 10% Triggering Circuit Breaker - $100M Crypto Liquidations Swept in an Hour

Bitcoin dropped from near $65,000 to $63,200, posting a 2.7% decline since the close of US markets. This downturn also dragged major altcoins such as Ethereum, XRP, and Solana into the red, while $100 million in liquidations swept the crypto market in just the last 60 minutes, according to data from WatcherGuru.

The initial catalyst for the panic originated in Asia. South Korea’s KOSPI stock index plunged 10%, hitting its lowest level since mid-April 2026. This marked a steep 25% drop from its peak in mid-June. The sudden slump forced the Korea Exchange to pull the emergency brake by triggering a Level 1 circuit breaker at 10:13 a.m. local time, right as the KOSPI index sank 8.02% to 6,213.51. This marked the eighth forced trading halt in 2026, as well as the 14th in the history of the Korean stock exchange.

Breaking Point in the Semiconductor Sector

The epicenter of KOSPI’s decline centered on its two largest tech giants. Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix slid simultaneously by as much as 14%. The drop in both heavyweights dealt a heavy blow to the index, given that they account for nearly half of KOSPI’s total weighting. Investors began offloading shares amid mounting concerns over the massive scale and funding burden of future artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure - doubts that immediately pressured semiconductor stocks across global markets.

The directional relationship between equities and crypto in this scenario sparked debate. Analysis from Bitfinex detailed that Bitcoin price movements are indeed tied to equities when pressure stems from macroeconomic factors or interest rates. However, that correlation generally breaks down and Bitcoin can decouple from equity trends when negative sentiment is sector-specific, such as the current debate over AI capital expenditures.

Heading Toward This Week’s Peak Tension

Beyond the panic across Asian markets, uncertainty surrounding US regulatory developments and monetary policy added further weight to the market. The US Senate recently delayed a vote on the CLARITY Act to prioritize a Russia sanctions bill. This postponement narrows the window for passing crypto regulation, leaving only the final days before the congressional recess begins on August 8.

Market participants are now focusing squarely on Wednesday, when the US central bank is scheduled to announce its benchmark interest rate decision. The following day, Core PCE inflation and GDP data will be released on Thursday. This series of macroeconomic events creates the week’s most critical volatility window. A WatcherGuru report noted that financial firm Citadel Securities expects the Fed to hike interest rates this week - a surprise move running counter to expectations of a rate cut. A separate report from Yahoo Finance also cited analysts who agree that a major directional move for Bitcoin is imminent. Today’s sharp decline could be the market front-running the moves before the official decision is handed down midweek.
