Standard Chartered dan HSBC Cetak Transaksi Pertama di Ledger Swift - Tapi Settlement Akhir Tetap Pakai Jalur Lama

Standard Chartered and HSBC Execute First Transactions on Swift Ledger - But Final Settlement Still Uses Legacy Channels

Standard Chartered and HSBC completed the first cross-border transaction running directly on Swift’s blockchain ledger. This transaction involved the exchange of payment messages between the two banks via the Swift network, while the recording of liabilities was accommodated in two platforms: HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service and StanChart’s tokenized deposit infrastructure.

However, this infrastructure overhaul does not discard the established legacy systems.

New Orchestration on Conventional Rails

Instead of taking over the entire process, Swift’s blockchain ledger plays a specific role here as an orchestration layer. This system is tasked with matching and netting interbank liabilities in the initial phase. As the transaction proceeds to the final settlement phase, execution still flows through existing conventional payment systems. This bridge design is intentionally created to connect tokenized deposits scattered across various bank infrastructures.

The primary impact directly transforms time efficiency: cross-border payment systems now operate 24 hours a day without interruption. For Swift, which stands as the world’s dominant financial messaging network, this move is an essential infrastructure shift. The network launched its blockchain-based ledger in July 2026 with participation from 17 banks representing six different continents.

Who Else is Queuing Behind the Scenes?

The list of participants joining Swift’s pilot phase features major names such as Citi, BNP Paribas, BNY, Wells Fargo, UBS, MUFG, DBS, and ANZ. The competitive landscape for interbank tokenized deposits is growing increasingly crowded. HSBC has been planning the expansion of its Tokenised Deposit Service since November 2025. The expansion landed in the United States corporate market in April 2026, with a target expansion to the United Arab Emirates in the first half of this year.

StanChart also has a parallel project in the same space. In July 2026, the bank completed a trial of Project Agorá, guided by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). The trial processed a transfer of $1 million across six different currencies. This transaction was settled thanks to a combination of tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves.

The Rules of Time are Beginning to Change

The wave of blockchain adoption by banking institutions continues to expand. The Clearing House, a clearing house owned by a consortium of major U.S. banks, is reportedly preparing to launch its own tokenized deposit network in the first half of 2027. For multinational corporations that routinely move funds, this series of breakthroughs solves one of the oldest hurdles: intercontinental transactions are now free from the operating hours of correspondent banks. As reported by Cointelegraph.
