US Treasury Yields Head Toward Record 6% - Ironically, the Surge Is Bolstering Bitcoin’s Position

Yields on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note continue to climb across global markets. Analysts project the benchmark instrument could breach the 6% mark, reaching highs last seen in 2000.

Crypto investors have good reason to approach rising traditional yields with caution. In 2022, the Federal Reserve’s rapid rate-hiking cycle sent bond yields soaring, dragging Bitcoin prices down by 64% in short order.

However, 10x Research founder Markus Thielen believes investors should not repeat that panic. He emphasized that today’s yield spike is not a threat to Bitcoin prices, as the upward momentum is primarily driven by market concerns over government budget deficits and elevated term premiums rather than aggressive Fed rate hikes.

Different Cycle, Different Price Reaction

Market data highlights that this negative correlation has broken down. Since late 2023, the 10-year yield has jumped 135 basis points to touch 5.23%, its highest level since 2007.

Under the 2022 playbook, this spike should have triggered a sharp retreat in crypto assets. Instead, Bitcoin’s price has more than doubled over the same timeframe, holding firm in the $84,000 to $86,000 range.

Thielen explained that heavy US government borrowing is the key to this anomaly. Mounting debt burdens have sparked fiscal worries among institutional market participants, directly reinforcing their thesis for holding Bitcoin and gold. Investors are seeking both as pure alternative assets that operate free of third-party counterparty risk.

Fiscal Risks Overtake the Fed’s Influence

A research note from Chicago-based Strategic Analytics further corroborates this shift in sentiment. The firm’s data confirms that price movements in gold and other non-yielding assets have recently become far more responsive to sovereign fiscal risks.

Major fund managers are shifting their focus away from central bank interest rate expectations, turning instead toward structural vulnerabilities in sovereign debt loads. For Bitcoin holders, widening US deficits are taking on a new role as a sturdy cushion safeguarding their assets amid macroeconomic uncertainty.
