Vitalik Buterin stated that the Hegotá upgrade scheduled for 2027 will likely be the last fork that remains “normal” and recognizable to 2015-era Ethereum users. After that point, future network upgrades will no longer resemble the initial architecture that has long served as its primary foundation.
Post-Hegotá, Ethereum development will shift away from standard fixes toward complex technologies. The network will adopt recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum-resistant cryptography to counter future computational threats.
Transition Toward a Cryptographic World Computer
The overarching vision behind this overhaul is to turn Ethereum into a “cryptographic world computer.” Under this architecture, more computational workload will be moved offchain. The network’s base layer will ultimately only verify final results, settle transactions, and maintain access to shared onchain state - rather than processing every transaction detail.
The first glimpse of this new paradigm comes in the PeerDAS feature. This mechanism allows nodes to verify data availability simply by sampling a fraction of the information, rather than downloading the entire dataset. Buterin highlighted PeerDAS as the starting point of Ethereum’s transition from an ordinary blockchain into something far more powerful.
The Tug-of-War Between Onchain and Offchain Data
Buterin’s views have sparked widespread discussion across the community. The debate largely centers on how much computation and state should be moved offchain versus how much must be retained on the base layer.
Ethereum researcher Barnabé Monnot supported this new direction but outlined strict boundaries regarding storage. Monnot emphasized that critical data underpinning applications must remain stored onchain. This requirement ensures that end users can still view and directly interact with data without relying on third parties.
RUNE Price Anomaly Outside the Network
While Ethereum developers are busy mapping out its 2027 infrastructure, an anomalous move unfolded in another altcoin ecosystem. THORChain’s native token, RUNE, surged 50% over the past week. This sharp rally coincided with controversy surrounding the network’s refusal to blacklist addresses tied to the Bitget hack.
For Ethereum, the Hegotá upgrade will mark a final boundary. Once this fork takes place, the classic form of the second-largest smart contract network will officially be left behind, clearing the path for offchain computation and quantum-era cryptography.
