South Korea’s Shinhan Card and Japan’s SBI Group are piloting yen-denominated stablecoin payments. The agreement, signed on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) and announced on Wednesday, involves two SBI subsidiaries, SBI VC Trade and SBI XDC Network APAC. The partnership is designed to integrate stable digital currencies into daily retail transactions.
The partnership focuses on connecting conventional payment cards with digital asset infrastructure directly at the consumer level.
Three Transaction Channels in One Pilot
The scope of the pilot covers three key areas. First, payment card purchases using stablecoin balances. Second, direct balance transfers between wallets. Third, cross-border trade settlements for business needs across both regions.
Throughout the pilot, Shinhan Card and SBI are evaluating consumer protection measures. This evaluation includes anti-money laundering (AML) compliance and the effectiveness of fraud detection systems during transaction processing, ensuring system security before a wider public rollout.
Why the Tourism Corridor Is the Primary Target
The bilateral tourism corridor is the initiative’s primary target. Data from the first eight months of 2026 recorded more than 10 million tourist visits across the South Korea-Japan border, generating heavy daily retail transaction volumes.
Of that traffic, South Korean tourists accounted for the largest group, with 7.42 million arrivals in Japan. During the same period, 2.7 million Japanese travelers visited South Korea. The yen stablecoin payments are designed for tourist purchases at retail outlets without the hassle of complex foreign exchange conversions.
Regulatory Track Record and Technical Experience
Shinhan Card brings technical expertise from prior trials. The South Korean card issuer completed a proof-of-concept for cross-border stablecoin payments and clearing systems in April 2026, which is now progressing to implementation alongside its Japanese partners.
In Tokyo, SBI VC Trade holds a key regulatory status after becoming officially registered in March 2025 as Japan’s first electronic payment instrument service provider. The license allows SBI VC Trade to handle official stablecoins such as USDC, serving as a regulatory foundation for processing yen stablecoins with Shinhan Card.
For millions of travelers on the Seoul-Tokyo route, this pilot marks an early signal of overseas retail payments moving away from complete reliance on traditional foreign exchange banking. The real-world readiness of fraud detection and consumer protection systems will determine whether these stablecoin cards are ready for checkout counters across both countries.
