The crypto industry’s big money turns out to have limits. In the Democratic primary election for Michigan’s 13th congressional district, pro-crypto incumbent Shri Thanedar narrowly lost to his challenger, Donavan McKinney. McKinney secured the nomination with 51.9% of the vote, leaving Thanedar at 48.1%.
This defeat occurred despite Thanedar receiving massive outside support. Protect Progress, a crypto political action committee (PAC) affiliated with Fairshake and backed by industry giants like Coinbase and Ripple, poured in over $2 million specifically for Thanedar’s campaign ads. This spending is part of the Fairshake group’s strategy, which has spent a total of $170 million in the 2024 US election cycle, specifically targeting funding for pro-crypto candidates and opposing industry critics.
The Burden of Campaign Fund Losses
In the House of Representatives, Thanedar had indeed built an image as an ally of the crypto industry. He is recorded as an active supporter of two pro-crypto bills, the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act. This industry-friendly stance was what led Protect Progress to spend $2 million to defend his seat.
However, his own financial portfolio brought new problems. Data shows that Thanedar suffered losses of more than $600,000 during the second quarter of 2026. These losses stemmed from his decision to channel $3.7 million of campaign funds into several crypto companies. The intention to make extra profits instead drained his logistical reserves just as he faced tough competition on the ground.
McKinney used this crypto PAC fund intervention as his main line of attack. The challenger accused the influx of big money as the industry’s way of “paying back my opponent for his service in helping Trump rake in $1 billion.” This narrative of fighting corporate money proved to be more well-received by Democratic voters in the 13th district than the barrage of million-dollar advertisements supporting Thanedar.
Next Test in November
The primary victory advances McKinney to the general election in November, where he will face Republican challenger Taras Nykoriak.
Meanwhile, the Fairshake group has shown no signs of slowing down spending after the defeat in Michigan. The crypto PAC affiliate was recently recorded funneling over $65,000 to support Amanda McKinney - a different politician unrelated to Donavan McKinney - who is competing in Washington state’s 4th congressional district.
The Michigan outcome sets a clear limit for industry lobbyists. While $170 million can monopolize TV ad time and intimidate politicians in Washington, it does not automatically translate into votes. For other candidates relying on crypto PAC funding, Thanedar’s fate highlights that millions of dollars in outside money cannot always cover up local campaign management blunders.
