8 Gerai Penukar Uang Kanada Kena Sanksi AS - Fasilitasi Kripto untuk Entitas Iran dan IRGC

8 Canadian Money Exchanges Sanctioned by US - Facilitating Crypto for Iranian Entities and IRGC

Eight money service businesses in Canada have officially lost access to the US dollar-based financial system. The US Department of the Treasury imposed financial sanctions against the entities for facilitating transactions on behalf of sanctioned Iranian parties.

The Canadian money exchange firms were accused of facilitating the exchange of Iranian rials and other foreign currencies into crypto assets. These digital fund transfers were carried out to facilitate international financial transactions for restricted parties.

The US Treasury stated that the processed transactions involved sanctioned Iranian crypto exchanges. The crypto pipeline also funneled funds to digital wallet addresses directly affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Identity Concealment and FINTRAC Coordination

US authorities coordinated directly with Canada’s financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC, to trace suspicious activity among currency intermediaries. This law enforcement cooperation was aimed at exposing cross-border illicit financial movements.

Official investigations uncovered deliberate evasion efforts. Several firms were found to have altered their operating names and business addresses to avoid detection by supervisory authorities.

The financial sanctions completely cut off the eight exchange outlets from the US dollar-based banking system. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that Canada must not become a haven for illicit financial facilitators backing the Iranian regime and its proxy groups. Bessent also affirmed that the US will continue dismantling Iranian financial channels around the world.

State Department’s $20 Million Reward

On the same day, the US Department of State took separate measures tightening pressure on Tehran. Through its Rewards for Justice program, the US government offered a cash reward of up to $20 million.

The $20 million reward is designated for anyone providing information regarding facilities, equipment, or personnel linked to Iran’s nuclear program. The US State Department even included relocation assistance options for informants willing to assist the investigation.

For foreign currency intermediaries, the joint action by Washington and Ottawa demonstrates that digital assets are no longer a shortcut for moving illicit funds. Neither corporate name changes nor office relocations could prevent them from being cut off from US dollar-based banking.
