One in four transactions on the XRP Ledger now runs without human touch. RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele reported on October 10, 2026, that payments powered by artificial intelligence agents account for roughly 25% of all network activity via the x402 protocol.
Data from the XRPL AI Hub shows the surge continuing rapidly. Shortly after announcing the 13 million transaction milestone, the platform logged 13.49 million transactions across 168 registered merchants, before climbing past 13.6 million transactions.
What makes this figure stand out is not merely the volume, but the speed at which machines are taking over transaction pathways.
How Machines Pay Without Human Permission
The x402 protocol serves as the engine behind these automated transactions. The protocol enables software agents to pay for a wide range of digital services, including APIs, data feeds, and AI compute power, directly on the blockchain.
Software agents execute payments autonomously without requiring manual human approval for each transaction. The XRPL network settles every transaction within 3 to 5 seconds.
Settlement of x402 transactions runs using two assets: native XRP and Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, RLUSD. To date, the system has logged a cumulative settlement volume of around 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD.
The network only crossed the 1 million AI transaction mark on July 8, 2026. This means the jump from 1 million to over 13 million transactions was achieved in just about three months.
100 Million Projection and System Readiness
Former Ripple product lead and t54 co-founder Chandler Fang expects this adoption to broaden. Fang anticipates more business lines will connect their commercial products to XRPL to unlock automated payment rails between programs.
Akinyele even suggested that reaching 100 million transactions could happen sooner than initially expected. However, that figure is strictly Akinyele’s personal projection, not an official target from the RippleX development team.
On the infrastructure front, the surge in autonomous agent transactions has been matched by technical network upgrades. XRPL developers previously patched a critical overflow bug and completed the Batch amendment with 85% validator approval to maintain system reliability.
A Real Test for Machine Payment Rails
For crypto market participants, this shift highlights a direction of adoption beyond standard speculative trading. As software bots begin exchanging value to pay for computing power within seconds, blockchain utility anchors directly to core system demands.
The next test for the XRP Ledger ecosystem is proving the resilience of its network architecture as millions of AI agents transact around the clock behind the scenes.
