Binance has officially invested $100 million to acquire an equity stake in stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL), alongside signing a new commercial agreement binding both entities for the next five years. The long-term deal primarily focuses on promoting and integrating the use of the USDC stablecoin across every corner of Binance’s exchange platform and broader business ecosystem.
According to Clear Street analyst Owen Lau, the investment move and commercial deal are designed to deepen an operational relationship that benefits both parties. In a research note, Lau highlighted that the new cooperation structure forms a partnership resembling a distributor-and-shareholder business model - a close collaboration tactic previously implemented successfully between Circle and crypto exchange Coinbase.
Expanding to 329 Spot Markets
The foundations for the two companies’ business integration trace back to their initial partnership established in December 2024. According to trade tracking data published by analytics provider Kaiko, USDC availability has steadily grown on Binance. Over that period, the number of spot markets quoting trades in USDC surged, climbing from 140 to 329 spot markets.
Confronting USDT’s Dominance
Across the global crypto market, expanding access on Binance is crucial for Circle as it works to close the market share gap. USDC currently ranks second with a total market capitalization reaching $74 billion. It faces off directly against Tether (USDT), its primary rival that dominates the top spot with a $140 billion market cap.
Recognizing that the battle cannot be won solely within crypto exchanges, Circle has devised a parallel strategy to broaden the reach of the Circle Payments Network. This plan is being realized through its acquisition of Tazapay, a Singapore-based payment service provider. The $400 million purchase is specifically aimed at building local banking rails, particularly to drive user adoption across emerging markets.
Competing for Global Distribution Channels
The combination of Binance’s $100 million cash injection and five-year agreement now secures Circle a guaranteed distribution channel on the largest exchange, complementing its fiat banking expansion via Tazapay. The stablecoin issuer race is gradually shifting from a pure contest of market cap size to who can build the most robust on- and off-ramps connecting to local financial systems.
