In a post on platform X declaring “Clear rules are almost here”, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong urged the US Senate to promptly pass the CLARITY Act. The call comes amid a narrowing window, with the Senate having only about seven working days remaining before breaking for its August recess.
Armstrong’s push adds to growing pressure from traditional financial giants. Previously, asset management firm BlackRock and investment bank Goldman Sachs also urged the Senate to take action. Officially named the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the bill has one critical objective: to clarify the jurisdictional boundaries between the SEC and CFTC in regulating the digital asset industry.
Sidelined by Russia Sanctions Priorities
Market hopes are now colliding with more pressing political agendas in Washington. The US Senate has reportedly delayed work on the CLARITY Act to prioritize two other matters: a sanctions package against Russia and the confirmation of various federal nominees. This shift in focus has once again pushed the crypto oversight bill to the sidelines.
Market figures immediately reacted to the growing pessimism. The probability of the CLARITY Act passing before the recess reportedly plunged to 27%, down from its previous level of 34%. Tensions over the bill’s fate were also reflected on social media, where a post by @WatcherGuru garnered 4,708 likes and 434 retweets, making it today’s most viral post regarding crypto regulatory issues.
Double Pressure on the Crypto Market
Uncertainty in the Senate risks triggering moves from other government agencies. Reports indicate that the SEC is already in “ready to act” mode, prepared to roll out its own independent crypto rules if Congress continues to stall on legislation. The industry now finds itself caught between two issues - stalled legislative progress on one side and the threat of unilateral enforcement action by regulators on the other.
The legislative deadlock has had immediate consequences on price action today. The broader crypto market is now under pressure from a combination of two negative sentiments: the Federal Reserve’s persistently hawkish stance and lingering regulatory uncertainty. Without clear legal certainty from the United States, the global crypto investment climate - including for investors in Indonesia - will remain trapped in limbo.
These remaining seven days will determine the trajectory of the crypto industry through the end of the year. If the Senate fails to formalize clear rules of the game, this gray area could quickly be filled by law enforcement agencies operating without statutory guidance. Reported by @WatcherGuru on X.
