Crypto industry players are making another move in the political arena. Protect Progress, an affiliate of the Fairshake political action committee (PAC), has spent nearly $986,000 on ad buys in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary. The funds are specifically aimed at defending incumbent Shri Thanedar and fending off challenger Donavan McKinney ahead of the August 4, 2026, primary vote.
Thanedar’s name is well known among digital asset lobbyists thanks to his track record. In the House of Representatives, he has consistently voted in favor of nearly every pro-crypto measure, including the CLARITY Act, the GENIUS Act, and the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act. This string of supportive votes has now yielded a financial shield nearing one million dollars.
Portfolio Losses and Challenger’s Allegations
Ironically, Thanedar’s vocal defense of the sector took a bitter toll on his investment portfolio. The incumbent reportedly logged losses exceeding $600,000 in the second quarter of 2026. The red ink came after he placed $3.7 million of campaign funds into crypto firms - an investment that quickly became ammunition for rivals seeking to unseat him.
McKinney has not stayed silent as lobbyist money flows in to protect his rival, sharply criticizing the outside capital entering the district. “The crypto lobby is paying back my opponent for helping Trump,” McKinney said, underscoring the rising tensions ahead of the election.
As an incumbent, Thanedar boasts a strong electoral record. In the 2024 election, he secured a 54.9% victory in the primary before cruising to an absolute 68.6% majority in November. The influx of hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising firepower is set to make his defense even harder to breach.
$191 Million War Chest Ahead of Key Elections
The spending in Michigan is just one piece of the crypto industry’s broader political operation. Fairshake and its affiliated groups currently control a $191 million campaign war chest. These funds are earmarked to influence voters in battleground areas and ensure pro-digital asset lawmakers maintain their presence in government.
Lobbying dollars have already proven capable of swaying races. Protect Progress previously deployed over $100,000 to back Arizona Representative Greg Stanton, who subsequently won his primary with 65% of the vote. The lobby also operates across party lines for Republican contenders - Defend American Jobs PAC spent more than $65,000 supporting Washington candidate Amanda McKinney.
Other lobbying groups are also stepping up to back their favored candidates. The Fellowship PAC, backed by Cantor Fitzgerald and Anchorage Digital, has entered the fray alongside the Blockchain Leadership Fund, which is run by Anchorage and Chainlink Labs.
The ballot box in Michigan’s 13th district next month will serve as a key litmus test. Against the backdrop of millions in campaign fund losses, it remains to be seen how much sway the crypto lobby truly holds with local voters.
