Coinbase posted a net profit of $719 million in the third quarter of 2026. This performance snapped a two-quarter losing streak, which included a $394 million deficit for the US-based exchange in the first quarter.
The return to profitability came even as the company’s revenue barely moved. Coinbase generated $1.22 billion in total revenue, relatively flat compared to the previous quarter. This swing to profit was primarily driven by valuation gains on crypto assets held on the company’s balance sheet.
Book gains on balance sheet assets were not the only driver of the quarterly performance. At the same time, a new business line at Coinbase gained rapid traction, outpacing any other product launch in the company’s history.
Fastest Leap in Exchange History
Prediction market products, or prediction markets, became the fastest growth engine in Coinbase’s history. The segment posted annualized revenue (annualized revenue) surpassing $200 million.
Trader participation in these instruments expanded rapidly. The number of daily traders in the prediction market segment surged more than 60% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ). In terms of revenue, the segment recorded a compound growth rate of 82% per quarter since its debut.
This transaction growth remained steady regardless of the sports calendar. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that volume and interest in prediction markets grew consistently, even through the off-season lull in sports competitions.
A Buffer Beyond the Spot Market
The characteristics of prediction markets opened up new diversification opportunities for Coinbase. Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas stated that the prediction market line provides a fresh revenue stream that is not directly correlated with crypto spot trading volatility.
This model offers an additional revenue stream when coin trading activity slows down. When spot transaction volumes decline or markets trade sideways, event-based prediction contract instruments continue to actively drive user transactions.
A Wide Gap to Record Highs
The return to profitability has not yet been fully reflected in the company’s share price on Wall Street. Coinbase shares (COIN) closed at $160.59 before the official earnings report was released.
That price remains down more than 55% from its 52-week high of $361.40. For investors, Coinbase’s return to profitability and the rapid expansion of prediction markets suggest that business diversification is beginning to pay off, even though the stock’s valuation still faces a long journey back to its peak.
