ElizaOS Founder Kills Own Token - Hands Over Foundation Treasury to Settle Lawsuit

The ElizaOS (EL) token fell 19% in 24 hours to an all-time low. This price collapse was not triggered by market panic, but by a unilateral announcement from the founder, Shaw Walters. He declared that the ElizaOS token is now completely dead. As a concluding step to this internal crisis, Walters officially dissolved the Eliza Foundation and handed over the remaining foundation treasury to a group of token holders who filed a lawsuit through Burwick Law representatives.

Lawsuit That Drained the Treasury

This bitter dispute stems from a lawsuit filed last April. The lawsuit targeted prominent names as defendants, ranging from Eliza Labs, Walters, Sebastian Quinn-Watson, to the AI16Z DAO entity. The allegations leveled against them were multi-layered: false advertising, deceptive practices, negligent misrepresentation, and allegations of unjust enrichment at the expense of investors.

Walters previously responded that the allegations in the lawsuit were actually ridiculous. However, he was forced to surrender to financial reality as the ElizaOS project had run out of capital to continue fighting in court. Based on a stipulation document dated July 8, a settlement was finally agreed upon. The primary plaintiff’s claims were officially dismissed with prejudice, while the class claims were dismissed without prejudice.

End of the Story for a $2.5 Billion Market Cap

The decision to kill the token marks a contrasting end for a project that was once highly valued. At its peak in January 2025, the token reached a market cap of $2.5 billion. At the time, the token was still using the name AI16Z. That glory came to a halt when Andreessen Horowitz filed a stern complaint regarding the similarity of the project’s name to their venture brand, a16z, leading to a mandatory identity change to ElizaOS.

The foundation’s remaining treasury has now been fully diverted to settle this civil dispute. Surrendering the remaining capital was the price that had to be paid to free the founders from time-consuming court proceedings.

Token-Free, Open-Source Continues

Although the token has been officially buried and the foundation dissolved, the core technology does not die with it. Walters ensured that the development of the Eliza open-source software continues as normal. Since he holds the claim to the project’s intellectual property (IP) rights, he is preparing to rebuild everything purely from scratch.

However, this new chapter will no longer involve cryptocurrency. “I am starting from scratch… I will never support the presence of another Eliza token,” Walters said, emphasizing his commitment. He chose to let go of the foundation’s remaining treasury to secure a settlement, letting the token die in the market so that its codebase could live on. Reported by Cointelegraph.
