Ethereum Brings Native Privacy to 2029 Roadmap - But Quantum Threats Take Priority

Vitalik Buterin has recently shifted Ethereum’s priority list through 2029. Through an X post on August 10, 2026, the Ethereum co-founder compared the 2023 roadmap with a new design draft called Strawmap. Protocol-level privacy and quantum security have now shifted to the forefront.

This shift in focus is not merely a scheduling adjustment, but rather a change in how the network processes user transactions.

Bringing Privacy Directly into the Protocol

The most striking addition absent from the 2023 roadmap is native privacy. Ethereum is now exploring a series of new mechanisms to protect user identity, ranging from components of FOCIL, keyed nonces, recent roots, lean privacy pools, to wormholes.

The implementation of keyed nonces will make it harder for external observers to link the transaction history of a single user. This security is also reinforced by FOCIL, which is specifically designed to make the transaction inclusion process far more resistant to censorship practices by block builders on the network.

How Ethereum views scalability has also shifted. The network is beginning to move from general scaling mechanism designs toward limited but highly scalable systems. This specific approach targets certain activities such as token transfers, decentralized exchange (DEX) transactions, and privacy protocol functions.

Native Rollups and Data Space Auctions

The rapid advancement of zero-knowledge proof technology has triggered the birth of the native rollup concept in the Strawmap document. This new design will move part of the verification tasks directly into the core Ethereum protocol. The effect is clear: Layer-2 (L2) networks can cut the need to build complex custom infrastructure for data processing.

Buterin also introduced new concepts called blob and gas futures, which were absent from the old roadmap. This feature allows users and L2 entities to lock in access to Ethereum’s data capacity in advance for future needs.

On the code reliability front, the formal verification process is deemed increasingly practical thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence. Buterin even previously referred to this AI-based approach as the ultimate form of software development.

To counter hacking via quantum computers, Ethereum is considering the adoption of post-quantum scaling systems. Candidates include LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation, and the zkzk frames concept. Concurrently, the design of verkle trees is evolving into a binary tree and then proceeding to the PBT design, while the state expiry idea has now matured into a new state types proposal. Conversely, Verifiable Delay Functions (VDF) and several planned EVM improvements have been deprioritized.

Not a Rigid Timeline

It is important to note that the Strawmap document is not a final release calendar. This update plan still requires deep research, multi-layered network testing, and full consensus among core developers.

For users and L2 entities, this document sends a clear signal: Ethereum’s base layer architecture is preparing to absorb functions previously handled outside the system. Once these updates are realized, the rules of the game in the layer-two market will change, and players will have only one option - to adapt to the network’s new engine.
